I would reduce from the beginning to look like:
1/3 X 3/4 = 3/12 reduced 1/4

Class ate 3/4 of 32 = 24 pieces
so there is now 6 pieces remaining in which the brothers would eat 1/3 each, so 1/3 of 6 is equal to 2 pieces each.
